about me
I’ve always been curious about how things look, how they work and what makes them interesting. My love of photography sits alongside a fascination with design, theatre and the arts, and all of those things inevitably find their way into the way I see a photograph.
I’m also all about the light. I can’t seem to help noticing it – how it falls across a room, picks out a texture, changes the mood of a face or transforms something completely ordinary. Good light can make a photograph, and finding it is one of the things I enjoy most.
I like to explore. and will look at a space from every possible angle, notice the tiny details, move things around, change the light and occasionally build an entire set from scratch if that’s what the photograph needs. I’m also rather fond of a little creative mischief – sometimes the most interesting image comes from doing something slightly unexpected. I enjoy the process of working things out and finding the right combination of composition, light, styling and atmosphere to make an image work.
After more than fourteen years as a professional photographer, I still love learning. Every commission gives me something new to work out, whether that’s a difficult space, an unfamiliar subject, a particular piece of light or simply finding a different way of seeing something.
Good camera craft matters enormously to me. So does curiosity. And so does having enough imagination to know when the obvious photograph isn’t necessarily the best one.
That, really, is what I bring to a shoot: experience, observation, a slightly unconventional way of looking at things and a genuine enthusiasm for making the photograph work.
I'd love to hear what you're working on. Tell me a little about it and I'll get back to you.
